The Cancun beach recovery project continues to move ahead in bringing back the gorgeous beaches that were destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005.  With an investment of $71 million USD, the work will restore the beaches of Cancun’s hotel zone (east side), Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.  As of today, the beach reconstruction workers have reached The Aqua hotel (around km 12.5) and will continue south.  Two hotels on the strip (the Gran Caribe Real and The Royal) had faced legal difficulties with the project and were told they would not receive the beach treatment, but an agreement has been reached and they are being included in the beach reconstruction.

The work that has been completed from Punta Cancun down to The Aqua hotel shows a huge stretch of white sandy beach, 80-100 meters wide.  The sand is still settling and there are areas that have a “ledge” where the sand has naturally eroded.  It is still a spectacular beach and access to the ocean is only minimally impeded.  The large pipes that were brought in to carry the sand have been removed from the area as far south as Le Blanc, but there is a fenced area running parallel to the sea where vehicles are passing from one end of the project to the other, simply be cautious when passing between the fences on your way to the sea.  It is expected that the project will reach the Royal Sands this weekend or early next week.

Tourists are eager for information about this project and while many are asking “when will the project be at my hotel?”, it’s really difficult to guess.  The project is moving quickly, but, as nature can impede the progress, it’s virtually impossible to say “your hotel will have sand” for a specific date.  It’s estimated that the project will be completed by February, definitely in time for spring break.

To give you another “before” photo and an idea of why this project is so necessary, here’s a look behind the Villas Marlin from around the Barcelo Tucancun.  In a very short while (probably less than a week), this beach will have a whole new look, I can’t wait to have the after photos for you!

With hundreds of hotels to choose from in Cancun, it can be difficult to make a decision on where to stay. When you find a place you love, you never want to leave and you find yourself coming back again and again. The Solaris hotels are known for their repeat guests, people who just can’t stay anywhere else once they have experienced the service and quality of the Royal Solaris and GR Solaris resorts.  We were fortunate this week to receive an invitation to tour these properties to see why people fall in love with these Cancun resorts.

From the moment I walked into the Royal Solaris, the warmth and intimacy of the resort was apparent.  The hotel is large, 500 rooms, but it never felt like we were in a gigantic resort.  The layout and architecture of the hotel is cozy, not overwhelming, and the friendly staff made me feel right at home with their smiles and greetings.

Royal Solaris

Royal Solaris

The facilities at the Royal Solaris are impressive, well maintained and warmly decorated. The hotel is comprised of two towers, the Royal tower is lively and active and the Caribe tower is more tranquil and calm.  The rooms in each tower are ample, bright and fresh, inviting places to relax after a day in the sun. Guests have the choice of deluxe rooms with lagoon views, deluxe ocean view or deluxe ocean view with Jacuzzi.  Imagine sitting in a private Jacuzzi listening to the crashing waves and enjoying the spectacular view of the Caribbean Sea!

Guests are invited to take advantage of the spa, with a full range of treatments available and the salon is ready to take care of all your beauty needs.  With eight restaurants and five bars, guests have a wide variety of dining options and the food is delicious!  The Royal Solaris has a great kid’s club, the centerpiece being a children’s pool with elephant fountains and a pirate ship slide as well as organized activities for the young traveler.

After touring the Royal Solaris we moved down the road to check out the sister hotel, the GR Solaris.  The GR Solaris is slightly smaller (306 rooms) and a little more elegant, still great for families but catering more to couples and romance.  The restaurants are beautiful, offering a wide variety of international cuisine.  Enjoy 24 hour room service in your beautifully appointed room, soak in the Jacuzzi overlooking the sea or pamper yourself in the spa, this is a great place to relax and unwind and let the attentive staff take care of your every need.  Like the Royal Solaris, the GR Solaris sits on one of the best stretches of beach in Cancun, and while there are many activities and things to do in the resorts, you may never want to leave your ocean side lounge chair.

I am confident in recommending both these hotels to our clients, they offer everything you could desire in a beach vacation at very reasonable prices.  It is clear why so many guests return year after year, with superior service, warm and friendly atmosphere and amenities to suit all tastes, the Royal Solaris and GR Solaris are great choices for your family vacation or romantic escape.

Cancuntravel.com is excited to offer exclusive discounts at both hotels, with 50% off the Royal Solaris regular rate and 45% off the GR Solaris and two children under eleven years old stay for free, you just won’t find better deals anywhere!  Book before October 31st, 2009 for travel before December 23, 2009 to take advantage of these great offers.  Check out Cancuntravel.com for special bonuses for seniors and honeymooners, chat with our bilingual customer service representatives and explore the incredible tours available in Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Mexico, having always been a top destination for travelers, is gearing up for this exciting event that will take place at the new eco-friendly and endless luxury Caribbean resort, Hacienda Tres Ríos near Cancun.

Graham Cooke, president of the World Travel Awards, commented, “Over the past 16 years these awards have been built on fostering the very highest quality in every aspect of travel and tourism, but this year has taken on an even greater significance due to the challenging economic climate, meaning each nominated company has had to go that extra mile.”
