Cancun Beach Recovery Dec. 22- Royal Sands Beach Open!

Cancun Beach Recovery Dec. 22- Royal Sands Beach Open!

If you are a Cancun lover, you’ll know that we are in the midst of a huge beach reconstruction project to rebuild the beaches that were lost in the hurricane in 2005.  So far the project is a huge success, with many hotels and public beaches gaining 80 to 100 meters of sand!  Some spots along the strip had been reduced to nothing, just rocks and water crashing against the barrier walls.  Now, the stretch of sand is huge, perfect for football, lazing in the sun, flying kites or romping in the surf.  I’ve been monitoring the project and every time I trek out to the hotel zone a big “WOW” comes flying out of my mouth when I see what they are accomplishing.  They are moving fast, the place looks great and hopefully more and more tourists will return to Cancun for the beaches that we are accustomed to.

Playa Marlin Before and After

The photos above show the incredible difference a couple of weeks can make.  This is located at Playa Marlin, near the Villas Marlin and Barcelo Tucancun.  So great to see the massive change in the beach!

The best news of the morning is that the beach behind the Royal Sands hotel is now open.  They’ve moved lounge chairs and umbrellas down to the sand and people were flocking to the new stretch of beach.  The pipes have been removed from about half of the beach behind the Sands, the project continues to move south from there.

Royal Sands Beach Complete!

The work is currently between the Royal Sands and Le Meridien.  Work should commence very soon on the Cancun Palace and the Marriott hotels.  Here’s a “before” photo behind Cancun Palace looking south towards the JW Marriott, will have some “after” shots soon!

Hi! Are the JW Marriott and Hilton done? Going the first week of February. Thanks!

  • Lyn M says:

    Hi Erin,
The JW Marriott is done, the Hilton is not. They are currently around the Omni. It’s difficult to estimate when they will be at the Hilton, many factors can influence how quickly the project moves, but they are working as quickly as possible. Hope you have a great trip!

Hi there,My family and I will be going to Royal Solaris Cancun. We stayed there last year and we decided to come back as we really liked it. Today, Friday January 08 I received an e-mail from our vacation carrier that The Mexican Government has commenced a beach restoration project which involves the use of heavy machinery and that it will affect any guests arriving at the ROYAL SOLARIS CANCUN from January 5th to 31st, 2010. We were set to leave on January 13 till January 27. What should I do? How long does it take to do one hotel beach? Do you think it will be ready for our arrival? Please reply.

    Hi there,
It’s very difficult to know where the project will be at any given time, currently they are working around the Royal Islander and just south. They are moving quickly, but with the weather we have been having they may be suffering some slow downs. There is no public timeline available unfortunately, so I am not able to help very much for what is happening in the immediate future. I would contact the hotel and see what kind of information they have been given in terms of timelines. Sorry I can’t be more helpful, hope you have a great trip!
